TURNOUT WAS  GREAT, WEATHER WAS GREAT, PILOTS WERE GREAT!

Well, we certainly did it!  We had an absolute blast flying all types and sizes of R/C airplanes, helicopters, and turbine jets during “Wings Above Ash Creek.”  We registered 55 pilots, had hundreds and hundreds of spectators, and filled our 20 acre Ash Creek Park with R/V’s and tents of all types and sizes.

Wednesday our club members showed up in force while we measured and lined out our freshly manicured parking areas with 200 lbs of chalk.  It was great that we did, cause we filled ‘em all and then some.  The first RV arrived Wednesday as we prepared for what might come next.

Thursday was a “soft start” day that we didn’t advertise- but that didn’t slow down the arrivals any.  Michael Brown, co-CD, said that the early turnout was larger than any previous event has ever been at our site.  It was very encouraging, especially with a somewhat “iffy” weather forecast of an unsettled nature.  I was cautiously optimistic at this point.

Friday brought additional campers and pilots, but honestly the food sales and arrivals on Friday was less than expected.  Despite the incredible weather, it just wasn’t happening yet, and I remained still cautiously optimistic for success.  A great thing happened when our local TV station, KRCR, sent out a reporter who was absolutely fascinated by what we were all doing out here.  A true “kid in a candy store”, Adam filmed and interviewed us for several hours, and even tasted it for himself via the buddy box trainer system.  Now it started to feel like the calm before the storm, as if the crowds were right on the verge of coming.  Friday night, a spectacular lightning storm came in force, as if signaling the electrifying excitement of the following day to come.

Saturday was an amazing day in all respects, with absolutely beautifully cool, clear weather and hoards of spectators and many more registered pilots.  We made tons of BBQ burgers and dogs, and followed that with our now famous BBQ tri tip dinner (and yes, it will return for WAACK ‘10!)

Our noon raffle on Sunday concluded  with tons of prizes handed out from all of our generous sponsors.  If you came to our event and had a great time, please be sure to comment in the Presidents Blog.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all who were part of this!
